The difference between Dot peen marking and Laser marking

2023-10-25

Dot peen and laser marking are two different methods for marking surfaces and creating visible identification marks, logos, or text on a material.

Dot peen marking involves the use of a stylus that moves in a back-and-forth motion, striking the surface to form a series of dots that combine to create the desired mark on the surface. This method is typically used on harder materials like metals, plastics, and composites and produces a permanent, highly visible mark.

Laser marking, on the other hand, uses a laser beam to create marks on the surface of a material. The laser beam heat treats the surface to form a mark which is generally preferred for sensitive materials. The resulting mark is high quality, precise, and permanent and can be used on a variety of materials.

The main difference between dot peen marking and laser marking is that dot peen involves physical contact between the tool and the material, while laser marking does not which makes it suitable for softer and sensitive materials. Laser marking is also generally faster and can be more precise than dot peen marking.

The choice between dot peen and laser marking depends on the specific application, material, and required mark quality.
